Who am I? I am Gail Thompson: mother of one daughter, Laura, grandmother of six, partner to G. But I am so much more, and on these pages you can, if you care to, get glimpses of the me that might surprise you. Knowing just how much to reveal is always a struggle.
Who is G? She was my partner. From the day we met until she moved to the lake house in April 2011, it was 10 years, 6 months and 11 days. She probably checks these pages from time to time to see if I tell the world why we broke up. And someday when time has carried the players far enough into the future that this sad drama doesn’t embarrass them, I might.
Why G? Why not use her name? For personal and professional reasons, G is not out to the world like I am. Respecting her choices, I strive to protect her privacy. On the other hand, if you know me, you know G.
What do I write here? It’s all about me, my life, my history, reports from under the rainbow. On these pages you’ll meet people I know, or knew, or wish I had known..
Why do I write here? The short answer is that I have to write somewhere. It’s a compulsion. I have stacks of journals and diaries. I thought I wrote them so that I could read them when I am old and remember. But as I get older, I’m thinking of my daughter, grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren who might want to know more about what it was like to be me. I write here and other places (links to come) as well because memories are precious. Laura’s children and grandchildren will relish reading stories from her childhood and from my marriage to her dad.
But, Gail, why do you write here? Stories from under the rainbow – where gay/lesbian folk live – might surprise, enlighten, break through preconceptions, soften prejudices, and I hope bring a smile.
